Vietnam is transforming its power system with an increased share of variable renewable energy (VRE) in its generation mix. Further increases to VRE penetration is possible with data-driven analysis. The availability of data, specifically VRE data, is critical to this. To this end, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) works with various stakeholders in Vietnam to create publicly available high-resolution, multiyear VRE data.

This Power Sector Learning Series webinar will provide an overview of VRE data for Vietnam and how the data can be used by different stakeholders to inform on VRE deployment decisions. The webinar will showcase how NREL’s VRE data was used for the USAID Vietnam Low Emission Energy Program (V-LEEP II) PDP8’s analysis through capacity expansion and production cost modeling. The webinar will also feature a presentation of additional visualization tools developed by the USAID V-LEEP team, with support from NREL.
